Platform coupling and co-simulation of heterogeneous and distributed simulation components for the purpose of holistic validation scenarios

That is, on the one hand, a potential solution shall provide a comprehensive portfolio of ready-to-use simulation models fitting the target domain with appropriate granularity of detail along with the facilities to develop and adapt further models as required. On the other hand, it shall provide facilities for the integration of upstream, downstream, and co-simulation tooling in order to build and assess holistic testing scenarios. While most simulation tools focus on a specific system evaluation aspect like network communication, high-level functional behavior, or low-level hardware states (cf. Fig. 5.11), and others provide support for co-simulation between heterogeneous simulation model providers and the integration of those, only exceptional solutions support both. One such example is the Virtual Continuous Integration Platform (VCIP) [14], an instantiable validation solution based on an event-driven simulation framework with support for nestable models of computation and communication named FERAL. It includes out-of-the-box simulation models for common ICT system components such as those used especially in the automotive sector and can be coupled with prevalent co-simulators via adjustable integration connectors for the purpose of design space exploration and testing of holistic simulation scenarios [36].
